Of course “colo...Thank you for your cogent reply.

Of course “colored people” is an idiomatic phrase, and I had that in mind when I was writing the comment. I have to be honest (for some reason) and say that I was being Socratic in my comment. It was a way of asking indirectly for your clarification of the phrase and why you used it, since in all of the columns of yours I’ve read, I never recalled you using it (until recently, I wasn't a regular reader of the column). There is still the implication in the phrase that “colored people” are somehow special or different and “white people” are normal. Actually, the fact is that in our society colored people are perceived as different by white people, as well as colored people themselves, and whites are considered normal, due to racism (hateful, inadvertent, or just as a neutral aspect of the culture) and stupidity, reflected perfectly by that CNN newscaster. I’ve used far more inflammatory language at the risk of getting my ass kicked just to prove the point that you’ve made-that many words and phrases people find offensive have multiple meanings inherently or by context, which have no logical basis for being offensive. Not that someone needs a logical basis for being offended, but just like you point out in the column, censorship by coercion or outright banning is an idiotic reaction to being offended that serves no constructive purpose. It’s annoying to me that the phrase “colored people” is considered offensive when the phrase “people of color” isn’t when I think they mean exactly the same thing, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want them to say it. Argument facilitates enlightenment. Good old Socrates.

Anyway, that’s enough of my verbose and pedantic-sounding lame ass. I’ll just say I appreciate your ideas and your expression of them.

Michael
monstromuggins@hotmail.com
I welcome all serious criticism.

“Philosophy may be, in many respects, intellectual masturbation, but masturbation serves a good purpose.”Michaelhttp://www.facebook.com/numberonetommygunnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17388657.post-64531199473887681712012-07-23T01:18:23.480-04:002012-07-23T01:18:23.480-04:00Michael aka Terry Jones:
Thanks for the comment....Michael aka Terry Jones:

Thanks for the comment. "Colored People" to me seems just as logical as "black" or "negro" (the latter meaning BLACK in Spanish). I've met maybe one or two BLACK people in my life... the rest: various shades of brown, tan, pink, or white. I've never met a "yellow" or "red" person, though those terms are also used.

I use COLORED PEOPLE as a protest against AFRICAN-AMERICAN taking a racial meaning. That idiocy reached it's height when a CNN reporter called Nelson Mandela a "the first African American president of South Africa"... I'm sure he was surprised to find out he was American. But she had no other word! She couldn't say "Here's Nelson Mandela, the first African president of South Africa... he wasn't!"

Of course people are one as humans, but we have divided humanity into races. Colored People has a meaning different from people who have skin with color. Just like kick the bucket has a meaning different from "a foot against a pail." I object to that meaning being changed because of the intimidation by one or two people.

Thanks for writing,Mykel Boardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05074534390555223781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17388657.post-21174359400006318582012-07-22T08:38:45.313-04:002012-07-22T08:38:45.313-04:00This was a great column, as usual (and I don't...This was a great column, as usual (and I don't kiss people's asses, not even yours), however there is one aspect of it that I'm compelled to comment on, which doesn't have anything to do with the main point. I'm just splitting linguistic pubic hairs.
It's about calling non-white people colored people. I don't have any problem with the phrases "colored people" or "people of color," the latter being more acceptable for some reason I don't understand, because I think it's racist or any bullshit like that. The reason I don't like these phrases is that they aren't logical descriptions. The phrases imply that there are colored people over here, like what someone might deem me, and normal (white people) over there, like what someone might deem you. The underlying logic in the concept of "colored people" is a little racist, but that's not my point. My point is that white people are colored people too. They're colored white...or pink or, in some cases of horrible tans, orange-ish light brown. If they weren't colored, their skin would be invisible. I first heard someone say that white people are coloured too in an ethnic studies class, taught by an elderly black guy when he was talking about the formation of the NAACP. It wasn't supposed to be just for negroes; it was supposed to be for everybody. Everybody is colored; every body is essentially the same. That struck a chord with me.
I love language, I love free speech, and I embrace all words and phrases, since none can be inherently "bad" and the idea that any word or phrase could is ludicrous, but I do think some are incorrect in the academic sense.
Anyway, it's not like it detracted from the column, I just wanted to spew my two cents.

Michael (a.k.a.
